Students, staff and Marianists at St. Mary’s University prayed for the souls of their dearly departed at Casa Tuesday’s celebration of All Souls Day on Nov. 2.

Following Mexican tradition, a special altar was set up in the chapel with photos of loved ones who have died, candles, Mary’s flower (marigolds) and pan de muerto (bread of the dead). Dinner consisted of tacos, Mexican rice and colorful cookies, including a special skull-shaped cookie for El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Brain food. Finger food. An aspirant Padawan learner and perpetually-professed Jedi formator. A baby Curious George. A brother’s sister and a priest-who-is-a-brother-in-law. And a cameo appearance from the Provincial of the Marianist Province of the U.S.

Celebrating  Boo Bash and an early Halloween, Casa Tuesday served up special desserts and hosted a unique collection of visitors on October 26.

From pretzels and frankfurters (hot dogs) to apple strudels and a Black Forest chocolate cherry cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte), Casa María hosted an Oktoberfest-themed evening on Tuesday, October 19.

Texas has a sizable German community so it was appropriate to celebrate diversity this month. More than 60 students and staff from St. Mary’s and guests enjoyed dinner, decorations and Deutschland folk music.

Marianists of German heritage—Aspirant Mark Motz, Sister Gretchen Trautman, Brother Brian Halderman and Father Bill Berenger—cut the cake together. Prosit!

And, just like last year, the brothers were able to enjoy ‘parting gifts’ in the form of cookies to take home and enjoy!

Show us a sign, they said.

STOP right there, what do you mean?

Show us a sign, so we will believe.

STOP right there, believe what?

You cast out demons. Is it by the power of Beelzebul you do these things? (from Friday’s readings).

Show us a sign from Heaven.

Stop right there.

Why should I show you a sign from Heaven? We want a sign to prove who you are.

STOP right there.

Look at your own Salvation History for signs.

Look at what the Almighty God has done…given His only Son; given us Jesus.

Look at your own history and your own time:

Look at Chaminade…Mother Teresa…Francis of Assisi…your own families.

Look at creation…the fact that you can participate in creation…

Give us a sign, they said!

Sometimes the signs are all around us and we don’t see them.

– Brother Mike Sullivan, S.M.
