After a night filled with blessing rooms for the residents in Dougherty Hall, student ministers from University Ministry enjoyed ice cream treats with the Brothers.

The brothers of Casa María, in their traditional black and white suits, joined the St. Mary’s University community for its opening of the school year liturgy in the Guadalupe Chapel. The Rev. Rudy Vela, S.M. vice president of mission and identity of the University was the principal celebrant of the Eucharist and made reference to the upcoming Chaminade Year in his homily.

Occasional rain showers did not dampen the spirit of “Burgers with the Brothers,” the back-to-school barbecue sponsored by SGA and the Marianists of Casa María on Tuesday, August 24.

Several hundred students, faculty, staff, alumni and Marianists gathered on the lawn outside of Casa María—then quickly moved inside the community when it began to rain.

Over 350 burgers served, just like last year!

With three new members joining the community and a late-summer renovation of the kitchen, the brothers of Casa María began a new look to the new year together in typical Marianist fashion–praying, planning and dining.

In the community chapel, Mass of the 21st Sunday was celebrated in the morning; evening prayer featured the official rite of acceptance into the community for Mark Motz, Marianist aspirant, to coincide with the observance of the Queenship of Mary on Sunday, Aug. 22.

A celebratory dinner at La Fogata concluded the day’s events of reflection and planning for the upcoming year.
